CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN PROMOTED

Career advancement and accepting new responsibilities are all part of your changing and evolving role as a leader. As with all great journeys, it starts with that first step which can be exciting but also difficult and full of uncertainty. Being selected to be a member of the leadership team is a privilege that comes with distinct roles and responsibilities. By accepting a promotion, you now have a new role, a new set of responsibilities that when executed and performed properly can add great value to you both personally and professionally and to an organization.

One of the most significant responsibilities you have is to accept your new role. The transition from employee, or non-management to management can be one of the hardest things you may do in your career. You may at times feel overwhelmed, confused, frustrated and alone as you navigate your new role in leadership.

An effective leader must balance, monitor, and control their functional responsibilities along with their corporate goals, mission and strategy and maintain the highest standards of ethics and integrity. As a leader you must take an active role in this process, a leader has the responsibility to ask the right questions and not stop at the first right answer.

As an effective business leader, regardless, if you are sitting around the board table, in the daily and weekly management meetings, or on the shop floor, you must articulate a clear set of organizational values that embrace integrity, fairness and compassion. Values are different from ethical guidelines or codes of conduct. Guidelines and codes are specific rules about what a leader can and cannot do. Values, on the other hand, are more profound and enduring. Values communicate beliefs.

A leader, whether as a board member, senior manager, or new promotion, must encourage open and honest communication across all levels. As a new leader you must set the tone of your leadership style, one that embraces this open and honest communication approach as the leader. Authentic leaders listen with intent and invite feedback. And they act on what they learn.

This honesty and openness inspire trust, reinforces relationships and secures the loyalty of their employees, customers, and all stakeholders. This will be vital in this new environment that is marked with uncertainty and change as you accept your new responsibilities. This approach promotes a healthy relationship and dialogue with the people in your trust and look to you as their leader.

Finally as a leader, at every level, you must understand the vision of your organization and set your vision to align with the organizational goals of the company, the functional goals of your group but still recognizing that a company and a leader has a purpose as part of a larger community. The best companies and leaders are enthusiastic about contributing to society – from the products they sell, to the examples they set and the causes they support. The best companies and leaders have a vision that employees are proud of, that customers believe in, and their people understand.

Good Luck on your promotion and remember it is never about you, it is always about the people in your care!

Let’s work together. I am a practitioner as well as an educator and motivator, and an experienced senior leader and CEO with over 45 years of boots-on-the-ground experience. I led one of the largest rebranding initiatives in franchising history – The UPS Store, revolutionizing the $9 billion retail shipping and business services market.

I believe that none of us can achieve success without some help along the way. For each of us, there is a person, a mentor, who we are grateful towards and who can help us get to where we aspire to be. Sharing stories and experiences as a speaker is a way of recognizing the value of these experiences and giving back to the next generation of leaders. It also is a way of demonstrating in words and deed the value I am placing in mentorship. As for me, I have been fortunate to have worked with and mentored by some incredibly special people, and none more incredible than Coach John Wooden.

“Rocky was the Keynote Speaker at our FragilePak Connect Conference. His presentation on Balanced Leadership was educational, informative, and delivered with great energy and enthusiasm. We especially appreciated Rocky attending the conference to learn more about who we are, what we stand for and what we are trying to accomplish as a team. He received a 4.9 score on our survey and the following comments best represent the overall comments.”

“He was the best speaker and had useful life tips”

“Fantastic”

“Amazing”
