Great Leaders Create A High Performance
Culture Through Effective Communication

Genius is the ability to put into effect what is on your mind.
F. Scott Fitzgerald

GREAT LEADERS Connect their people with information to create a high-performance culture through Effective Communication.

They are not the leaders who go into separate rooms and text each other to work out their problems.

To be a Good Communicator you first need to understand your role as a leader, what you do, as well as what’s expected of you. Start with your Communication Goals.

Communication Goals

Inform, educate, and inspire employees in all business units, at all levels to:

  • Understand and embrace changes to the business
  • What it means to them
  • How they contribute to the company’s reputation and growth

Three Types of Communications

  • To inform
  • To receive information
  • To solve a problem

Communications Objectives

  • Help stakeholders gain an understanding of the direction of the organization and become committed to its success
  • Inspire leaders to own, support process changes and lead by example so the desired culture is institutionalized
  • Provide context for the change to give employees a line-of-sight between their efforts, the organization’s performance, and our shared rewards
  • Set clear expectations for employees so they understand their role in the organization
  • Neutralize opposition to change by demonstrating the benefits of the new vision and its supporting initiatives

Communication Equals:

  1. Building trust through listening
  2. Sharing knowledge
  3. Providing feedback
  4. Walking the talk

Traits of great communicators:

  • Approachable – This is key. Part of how we communicate, and act is how we garner people’s respect, trust.
  • Adaptive to his or her environment. We all have our own personal style. Your message and how you talk to your front-line employee are different than how you would communicate with your customer or others in your care or peers. At times you need to simplify your message. You should be able to read the audience with whom you are communicating. If people look confused ask for their feedback or confirmation that they understand.
  • Passionate – need to have the ability to inspire others. When delivering a message, you need to care about your message and your audience. You need to have some charisma or presence. Nobody wants to listen to a speech without passion. Great leaders all have selfconfidence. This needs to come across in our communications if we are trying to motivate our teams.
  • Prepared to Listen – one of the best forms of communication is the ability to listen and react. Personally, I travel around the country on a regular basis to talk to people not only to deliver a message but to get their feedback. A leader should always solicit feedback and most importantly do something with that feedback.

Do you meet with all your front-line employees on a quarterly basis? At the conclusion of the meeting does senior management provides a written recap of what questions / concerns came up during the meetings? Your expectation is that every issue is addressed. Leaders know the importance of asking the right questions. Asking questions helps leaders to determine the motives of others in a conversation. To lead an effective conversation, you may have to ask many questions to get to the root of problems.
