Personal Action Plans

The Rolling Stones
A great song by the Rolling Stones I always thought spoke
to the personal development frustration we all have at times,
and we can often see in our people, is the song titled:

You Can’t Always Get What You Want

The specific lyrics I am referencing go like this:

No, you can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometime, you’ll find
You get what you need

Personal Action Plan

Purpose

The purpose of completing personal Action Plans is to record your strengths and improvement areas in the skill areas you have identified. An analysis of these skill areas will allow you to create specific plans, that you will utilize to positively impact your operation and your personal and professional growth.

Step 1

Your first step will be to perform a SWOT Analysis and describe what you believe are your strengths, weaknesses, improvement opportunities and threats for critical skill areas such as:

  • Leadership Skills
  • Communication Skills
  • Accountability
  • Coaching
  • Handling Difficult Conversations

The Action Plans should specifically identify how you will transfer the action plan vision back to your job and performance.

Your Action Plans should adhere to the “SMART” formula:

  • Is the development goal clear?
  • Will you be able to quantify the improvement?
  • Is the goal challenging, but realistically attainable?
  • Is the improvement goal directly tied to your work and company goals?
  • Do you understand what gets done by you and when?

Consider your plan’s feasibility:

  1. What knowledge and or skills are required to reach this objective?
  2. Are additional resources required to reach the objective?
  3. What, if any, specific help is required from your manager?
  4. What kind of feedback do you need as you implement your Action Plans?
  5. How will you and your manager know if what you are doing is working?
  6. How often will you and your manager meet to check progress?
  7. What could go wrong? How can it be prevented?
  8. What percentage of your time should be committed to implementing your Action Plans?

Step 2

Complete Action Plans for the areas you have chosen. Seek guidance and validation from your manager, mentor and or peer to ensure you have identified the areas of improvement, and with an open mind to constructive criticism.

Step 3

Review your completed Action Plans with your manager. Revisit as often as needed, or complete additional plans for emerging situations.

Finally, go get what you need. You are the Architect of Your Own Destiny!
