YOU’VE GOT ME UNDERSTANDING

Bob Seger is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. Bob Seger is one of my all-time favorites.

Some of my greatest inspiration comes from lyrics of some of my favorite songs and their deep and profound meanings. A talented artist and songwriter can communicate in a profound way – something as leaders we can learn from and try to emulate. Think about these unique skills. While playing an instrument isn’t necessary to be a successful songwriter, you do need a strong understanding of music. Theory, song structure, the purpose of each instrument, and how to best utilize the music that accompanies your lyrics are all important components that need to be considered when you’re writing a song.

We often manage people in areas we are not experts in, but the successful leader will take a page out of the successful songwriters play book – that you do need a strong understanding of
music. In this case, a strong understanding of the business and what you are managing. I was fortunate to work for a company, UPS, which had a promotion from within policy that allowed me the opportunity to gain experience and develop within the organization. I started part-time loading and unloading trailers, and my first full time position was that of a delivery driver. I learned the job from the bottom up and never lost sight of this incredible opportunity to gain experience in the business. Every new role, especially in one I did not possess the knowledge and expertise, I spent a day learning from the ground up. As an example, we purchased Mailboxes, Etc., I was part of the integration team and the first thing I did was grab an apron and work in a store.

Inspiration and creativity are especially important skills as a leader – skills that many of you view as the hardest skill to develop. Creativity is crucial in creating high-quality songs that will resonate with listeners—and in business your ability inspire and motivate your teams. Writing a song, communicating with your people, is like writing poetry. There’s a rhythm to the music and a cadence to your operating style. The structure of your communication style should reflect that. It’s also a story that becomes your brand and legacy. When inspiration strikes, be sure to write your thoughts down with pen and paper. This way you can keep the creative juices flowing or save them for later when you have more time to develop a complete communication plan and strategy.

Collaboration and knowing how to work with others, as a songwriter and especially as a leader, is incredibly important. Some of the best records have come from collaborations. Successful leaders know how to collaborate.

Structure is maybe the most important skill when it comes to songwriting. Strategy development and communication skills in business also need structure and perseverance.

So back to one of my favorite songs. As you think, read, and listen to the words by Bob Seger, in the song titled Understanding, I think you can see how the song, for me, strikes as a great overview of a career, as a leader, mentor, and learner. It can also offer the opportunity for selfreflection. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btsIlNJyuSQ

Lyrics
It seems like only yesterday
I didn’t have a clue
I stood alone not knowing where to turn
Now suddenly I look around
And everything looks new
I don’t know why but I think I’m starting to learn

They call it understanding
Understanding
A willingness to grow
I’m finally understanding
Understanding
There’s so much I could know

Until the day you came along
I used to just get lost
I only heard the things I wanted to hear
It always seemed like no cared
Then you took the time
And now I look, and everything seems clear

You’ve got me understanding
Understanding
You’ve really helped me see
I’m finally understanding
Understanding
It’s meant so much to me
You’ve got me understanding
Understanding

You’ve given me some pride
I’m finally understanding
You’re really on my side
Really on my side
Got me understanding
Understanding

Understanding
You’ve got me understanding
Understanding
Understanding
You’ve got me understanding

For the first time
You’ve got me understanding
You’ve got me understanding
Understanding…

Finally, leadership is something we all have concerns about, and are always trying to understand. Leadership is a concept that is not reserved for or only applies to certain people in business, government, and civic organizations. The reality is that no matter our age, gender, occupation, educational level, or position in life, each of us touches and influences other lives.

Through this extension, we are all leaders to someone at some time. It can be a person under our supervision or care, a spouse we honor and live with, or a child we nurture, a student we teach, or a player we coach. It could be as simple as a fellow member of our church or religious affiliation, club, league, or association, but it is usually identified by the fact we have made a positive difference through our actions and examples.

With this sense of responsibility and being lifelong learners, we are constantly in pursuit of knowledge, whether written or experienced, learning how to be a good leader and how to improve our skills. We take immense pride in the books we have read and where they sit on the best-seller list. I often find that some of the best examples and learning experiences come from the stories we tell, the experiences we share and the songs we listen to.

Sometimes they come from the stories we learned as children or read to our children as parents or grandparents. Leaders must develop emotional intelligence along with their educational intelligence and business acumen. Sometimes a simple story or great song I find can help people see the bigger picture, promote moral and ethical behavior, and, just maybe, not take ourselves so seriously that we lose sight of the fact that it is not always about us.
